Feeling Cards

The Cards:
The Feeling Cards include 2 sets of 24 feeling-face-cards to help kids learn and practice happy habits - especially caring for feelings. Zentered Kids care for feelings because they are all important and okay.

The 24 feelings were chosen and are organized according to current research in social-emotional development. Each Card was
designed thoughtfully with careful attention to details including faces, shoulders, hands and torsos to illustrate how feelings are felt, expressed and seen in our faces AND in our bodies.

The Cards are for all ages and can be used individually, in small sets or as a complete deck depending on the activity, ages and needs of kids.

The Problem:
We often, even unknowingly, urge kids to share only positive feelings, eventually preventing them from fully accepting or expressing those considered to be negative or difficult. But none of us experience only a small range of emotions. When more undesirable or challenging feelings are denied they go underground, leading to dis-ease in our hearts, minds and even in our bodies.

Kids need to know that all of their feelings are important and okay, learn to express them in healthy ways and to recognize and respond to them appropriately in others. These are core components of
Emotional Intelligence.

How the Feeling Cards address the Problem:
The Feeling Cards can be used to develop Emotional Intelligence through greater self-awareness, self-compassion, emotion regulation, empathy and social skills. Here’s how:

Self-awareness:
Self-awareness requires that kids are able to first identify and name their different emotions and then understand how they influence
their thoughts and actions. To help kids become adept at identifying and naming feelings and begin to build understanding, use the Cards with games like Go-Fish-Feelings and Feelings Memory.

Self-compassion:
Self-compassion stems from accepting all feelings and responding to them with kindness. Use the Cards with our free
My Feeling Body Activity and games like Feeling Charades to help kids experience, respond to, play with and talk about specific feelings in deeply meaningful ways.

Emotion regulation:
Learning to cope with strong or difficult emotions in healthy ways takes practice. Use the Cards with any of our games to teach kids how to manage their emotions.

Empathy and Social Skills:
Recognizing and understanding others’ feelings increases empathy. It also expands social skills by helping kids anticipate how their own actions may impact others. Story-telling and role-playing using the Cards are a couple of very effective ways to encourage these.

Most of all, be creative and have fun with the Cards. Use our resources, develop your own or have kids be spontaneous and lead the way.

You can’t heal what you can’t feel.

Use our Free Feeling Printables for more unique and dynamic ways to play with the Cards.
